Since the creation of the Combined Arts and Performance society (CAPS). The we have begun our exploration by planning and generating interest in a Collaborative, interdisciplinary exhibition that will see Artists working together to push the boundaries of their expression. We hope it will offer insights into the nature of ‘working together’ and how we, as students, interact with different Medias, from sound to text, to canvas, to screen. We will explore performance based pieces that break the boundaries of theatrical conventions.

Ideally we would use the gallery space, the cinema and the foyer area but we aim to utilize of a number of other spaces so we can devise a ‘brief’ route for observers to follow.

Let's be ambitious and provide a multifaceted and original type of show !

The exhibition will explore the reality of ‘boundaries’.

Students are encouraged to begin discussing ideas in this forum - so please tell people the address.

We are looking for people to push the boundaries of their art by combining forces with students from 'other' disciplines.

If you can conceive it, you can achieve it! This show will have some kind of cohesion - a thread, a connecting something, to make it all the more curious.

We will let everyone know the proper submission guidelines in due course.

I suggested "Suspension" as the title because we're suspending the conventional boundaries of art and humouring a different, more experimental concept to see what happens. Which is suspenseful! Chris suggested "Bridge" for similar reasons: we're bridging the gaps. Tom suggested having a portmanteau, which I would disagree with, personally. Those are all of the suggestions I'm aware of but no final decision has been made.

I think we should organise a list of prime contenders and then open a poll to finalise which we all prefer. Sound like a good plan?

I do think we need to be more difinitive about what the requirements are for submissions because there is definite room for confusion. I also think we should try to sort that out before anyone starts forming a vision on what they're going to submit. We want to free ourselves from bias in order to keep this accessible to all, while having the greatest possible effect. Plus, it would just be a shame if that purpose ended up compromising any ideas that have already taken seed in our heads.

I'm coming back to Northampton on Saturday so I'll be in touch soon.

I agree. I'm not sure If I alone am capable of defining the requirements so if you can all help me out, I'd appreciate it.

There are a number of things we still need to do but the most important, I think, is getting all of us who met before xmas on this forum so we can throw around our suggestions - this will form the steering committee and help us to focus. We suggested having a section for the exhibition to aid our management of it; what are your opinions on that?

As for defining the exhibition; there are two approaches to take toward this, in my opinion. The first is for those on the 'steering committee' to understand what we want to achieve - we need to all have a common vision; the other is for those submitting proposals to have strict and concise guidelines to work against, so we do not, as you say, compromise ideas that have already taken seed.

We know the theme. We also know that it is essential to attract partnerships from varying disciplines. We'd also like to use as much technology as possible in imaginative ways, though it is not solely a technological exhibition. We discussed some different ways to define a collaborative process to make 'working together' more interesting; for example, a picture being given to a writer, a piece of writing given to a painter and so on to include as many disciplines as possible. This has scope. We need a thread to weave through the show so that some how it is cohesive and more wholesome. There are lots of possibilities.

I have had a walk around the Uni and looked at the various spaces we might be able to use. It might be an idea if a few of us meet up to do the same early on this term, as well as actually defining what we want in greater detail.

The poll idea is great; we should get that going.

Also, we have been asked by the university to discuss and define any other events we'd like to organise as a society. This might be writers, actors, musicians coming in to talk to us or an outing to an exhibition or a festival, for example - whatever we can come up with they will consider. Alice has put together a plan for the first term that focuses on the Art forum subject matters although it may well be interesting to a wider audience. You should all have a copy of it. Any feedback is welcomed and sought out. We have been asked to do this by the Uni so they can assess us for funding. The general itinerary for society events will always remain flexible but the Uni want to try and understand our long term visions; they actually asked for a year plan, so if you feel like being bold, let's start.

I'm meeting Alice later today so if anyone is keen to talk to me or us, please ring me on: 07728401569. Chat soon.

This is beginning to sound good. I like the idea of trails, things to be found where they are least expected! Why should modern art appear in a white cube gallery, or a play in a theatre? We nee to start thinking outside our little boxes.

I would be happy to co-operate with any other discipline. I am trying to paint that we cannot see, is there a writer or poet who wants to say the unsayable? If so maybe we, the blind and dumb may lead to something new. E-mail me with ideas, the more off the wall the better.

Lets get going!!!!!

Hi Dai,
we are just waiting on dates and some space...then we can start moving ahead at some better pace. I'm waiting for Christine to get back to us on this. Unfortunately this is a stalling point for us all because we cannot do the promotional material...

Unless we just tell people about an up and coming show, to get people talking. What do you think?

Hi solst,

Maybe not "tell" people, but get them talking is a great idea. What we need is a "Whisper campaign". You know the sort of thing - Posters "ITS COMING!!","IT WILL BE HERE SOON", "ARE YOU READY" & so on. Then when people ask you tell them and enthuse them. Others brighter than I can work out a campaign, but I'll help all I can.
